Along the Canals
We had an interesting day which started in San Miniato as we hiked out to an absolutely beautiful morning looking out over the valley. We decided to hike ‘backwards’ from our hotel back to where we ended our walk yesterday. The biggest reason was the hundreds of of steps that we could walk down instead of up when leaving our hotel.
It was a cool and clear morning as we headed downhill on the Camimo trail. We were still surrounded by woods when we heard the crack and crash of a tree falling in the woods. We got to the bottom of the hill and headed out to the plain. This area has many canals that we walked along as we headed out to our destination.
The sky was mostly clear and the temp was 58’when we started. We hiked along canals and thru small suburbs. The land was flat so pretty easy walking. We looked left and right and saw backyard filled with gardens. They were growing onions and lettuce and cabbage/. They also had many fruit trees that were close to being ripe/.
We saw some areas where they had rows of trees planted like any other crop. Several fields had big round bales of hay still sitting in the fields and another cover crop was growing - looked like alfalfa. Not sure when the crop season ends in central Italy but it must be soon.
We went thru Fucecchio which was a good sized town. We ate some luck at a small cafe then headed uphill to a beautiful old church with another great view. We went down the to the plain again and the canals were wider than before.
We were into ‘walk mode’ as we finished the walk along the canals. We did have one issue with one walking bridge which was out of service. We tried to walk ahead to find a crossing point but finally turned back to the previous bridge across the canal. Thought about trying to jump the 5 food canal but decided it was too take.
We finally crossed the Medici bridge and got back to the same restaurant we finished at yesterday. We got the hostesss to call us a cab and cruised back to our hotel.
Dinner was a repeat of last night at the hotel restaurant - great food and great service. Even the bread is outstanding.
Long day tomorrow so back to the room for a final glass of red wine.
