Checking the Ferry and Had An Adventure Today
Yesterday was Thursday and we decided to take it easy. We had a slow start and had lunch very close to our apartment. We have decided to avoid two big meals each day. We hiked down 200 vertical feet to the harbor to figure out how the ferries worked. Then hiked back up!
We went for a 5 o’clock wine nearby and enjoyed watching the people go by. They buildings are very close together with 10 feet between them. This is the old town and only scooters and bikes can go down the narrow streets. We love watching the people - all kinds of people - all shapes and sizes and countries. Then back home for a snack of cheese and percutto and wine. It was a nice day in sorrento.
Today we planned on a hike out to the Roman ruins at the end of the isthmus. We walked up to the top of the hill above sorrento and the views were great. We were on a narrow road and a small garbage truck headed right for us with not much room. Dianne moved ahead near a rock wall to get out of the way but Jack messed up and slipped off the edge of the road falling 6 feet into some heavy brush landing on his backpack. Luckily he wasn’t badly hurt and was able to get to his feet. He threw up his hiking poles and backpack. His head barely made the roadway so it took two strong men to drag him up the stone wall and back onto the road. Jack was a little sore but not badly damaged. We thanked everyone profusely and continued our hike. It was a scary moment but we were happy it worked out.
We walked a little farther and decided to head home in case Jack got too sore later. As we walked back we stood over the place Jack fell and saw how close he landed to some large limbs that could have done some bad damage. The backpack cushioned the fall and so did the thick brush. As we stared down we suddenly noticed that the keys we needed to get back into the airbnb had fallen out of jacks pocket. The drop was straight down with no way to climb down or up. We decided to go back to our Airbnb and regroup before attempting to recover the keys.
The walk back was smooth without too much pain for Jack. We grabbed some lunch as we waited for our airbnb hosts to let us back into our apartment. Our hosts were worried about us but we let them know Jack was OK.
We grabbed a bunch of stuff including a broom, tape, paper clips, magnets, and Apple Watch chargers. We could see they just had to reach down and somehow pull it up.
We hiked back to the scene of the fall and out together a broom handle and two hiking poles all end to end. At the point we took a large paper clip which was bent into a hook and taped on the end of the broom handle. Jack carefully reached down and was able to snag the key ring. Then he slowly tried to pull it back but it got stuck on a berry vine. We kept manipulating it into it cleared and it finally got free and we swung it back up onto the road!!! What an adventure. We packed everything back up and headed home.
We took long hot showers and headed out for a 5 o’clock stroll. We are sipping wine at a cafe nibbling peanuts and bugles and watching the people go by.
Quite a day!!

That’s quite an adventure for the day. We were 4 hours in Uffizi and then an hour in The Duomo museum. I did break my glass of wine in the bistro for dinner.
ReplyDeleteWow. Lucky guy to walk away from that fall! You two might become famous American tourist in Sorrento. The man who fell into a berry bush!
ReplyDeleteTown looks charming. Todd & I were there for about 3 hours & lunch on a tour years ago. Enjoy your time there.
