Up Up and Away

It was a wonderful morning in San Miniato with clear skies and cool breezes.  We decided to skip ahead 2.5 miles to make our walk only 12 miles instead of almost 15.  That turned out to be a great plan as the end of the day was a long steep climb into Gambassi Terme.

Our cab dropped us off at a roadside park where we loaded up and began our walk.  The sun was shining and as we looked over the valley our cab driver was able to point out our final destination of the day - about 12 miles away.

The walk was mostly on gravel trails all day which was wonderful - great for our feet.  We walked thru farms and fields and vineyards where they were harvesting the grapes.  We saw both hand harvesting of grapes as well as a mechanical harvester that stripped the grapes off the vines.

We saw beautiful villas and abandoned homesteads along the way.  Italy like a lot of farm countries are losing people to the cities and country places are being abandoned.

The views on both sides spread out below us for 10s of miles.  We could see farms and fields and forests and vineyards and orchards.  Everything was so green!  It was a beautiful day to be walking in Tuscany.

The weather started cool in the 50s.  The high was 72 with a nice breeze but plenty of sun and not alot of shade.

We stopped lunch at a roadside picnic table which was kind of unusual.

There were a lot of walkers on the trail today so that was fun.

Our village tonight sits on top of a hill and is kind of quaint.  We go to a pizza restaurant for supper.  Dianne wants salad and I will have a pizza with red sauce so she won’t eat it.

Our day tomorrow is shorter but should still be fun.
