Positano, Amalfi and Ravello

We got up early today - Tuesday - and boarded a van with 6 other people headed for the Amalfi coast.  Our driver - Marcella - was a wonderful lady who made the day special.  She was a very good driver in unbelievably tough conditions.

We left at 8 and got back around 5 and we were busy the whole time.  We started in Positano which was a fun little village.  We parked above the town and walked down to the sea.  The town was busy with lots of shops and tourists.  Jack had a cappuccino since he didn’t have time for breakfast.  The sea was beautiful and the sand stretched out in front of the fishing boats anchors in the harbor.  We climbed back up to the van and headed for Amalfi.

It’s impossible to explain how crazy the drivers are in Italy.  Giant buses and tiny scooters and everything in between all battle down narrow roads and tight turns.  At times you have to backup to allow oncoming traffic to pass.  We had two huge buses battle it out at one point - slowly inching past each other at a snails pace. Pretty crazy.

Amalfi was beautiful just like the entire drive.  These picture perfect villages sit up above the beautiful Med sparkling with colors.  Every turn of the road brings more beautiful views!

One highlight was a spectacular church with a very long set of stairs up to the entrance.  Dianne had been talking about a church she remembered with those stairs and we finally found it in Amalfi!!

We had some time in the Amalfi village then boarded a tour boat to see the villages from the sea.  They were so beautiful above us and our tour guide pointed out many unique places. Gore Vidal owned one villa and another was used for a 007 movie. Gina Lolabridgida also had a villa near Amalfi.

We loaded up and headed uphill to reach Ravello.  We are in a hillside restaurant and it was a wonderful meal. Then we visited the village and saw many ancient ruins as well as a very pretty church.

We had to head back and we went along the same road as this morning - though the traffic was definitely less.

We got back just before the rain started in Sorrento.  It was a wonderful day.
